Saving money and the planet

For homeowners and business people alike the management of costs is crucial. Energy is a continual cost we all must bear.  Given that there is an additional concern about the environment, with energy usage contributing to our carbon foot print, reducing the amount of energy we use also seems a good idea.

Technologies have arrived in the market place which are making it possible to reduce the energy used in businesses and at home.  The question is, which technologies are viable? A heritage Suffolk long house is terribly energy inefficient but might present a restricted opportunity under a listed status or a large modern house could be ideal for solar panels but has the wrong roof orientation.  So what other options are there?

The answer may be an energy survey, but this carries a cost. For businesses some could qualify for a free survey and grants toward installations of recommended schemes.  For homes, because the need is a little easier to identify, then using a common-sense approach to reviewing current usage and identifying available schemes is the only logical way forward, but without a grant, carrying out a £500 energy survey on a standard home will just not give sufficient payback.

Equally for business the cost justification is paramount. Spending on any project where the payback is 10 years or more could be difficult to justify; however, if the payback is in 2 years there may be a good reason to go ahead.

If energy costs escalate (and no one is predicting a cost reduction) the impact of any action taken now will be even greater.  So, there are good reason to review energy usage, plan a strategy and get on with saving both money and the planet.
